ST ATHANASIUS SEMINAR 2026

May 4-8

Transfiguration by Theophan the Greek, 15h century

The Renewal and Sanctification of the Human Being in

Orthodox Theology

with V. Rev. Dr Alexis Torrance

In this course we will examine the Orthodox Christian approach to the human being as made in the image of God and summoned to divine likeness – theosis. We will begin with the Psalmist’s question, "what is man?" (Ps. 8:4) and move through the drama of humanity’s fall and redemption. Our guides will be some of the major spiritual authorities of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, including the early ascetic fathers, Sts Maximus the Confessor, Gregory Palamas, Nicholas Cabasilas, and more besides. Through their texts, we will uncover the rich and multi-textured meaning of the renewal and sanctification of the human being from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Above all, the centrality of the person of Christ will emerge as a leitmotif that grounds and orients the whole Orthodox Christian vision of the human being and the nature of salvation.

Fr Alexis Torrance is Associate Professor of Byzantine Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He has published over forty articles and book chapters, and authored or co-edited five books, including Repentance in Late Antiquity and Human Perfection in Byzantine Theology: Attaining the Fullness of Christ (both Oxford). He is an Orthodox priest in the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
